It can be challenging to think about what to do next when you’re upset. Here, the auto experts at Valdosta Toyota explain what to do after a car accident and how to file an insurance claim.

What to Do After a Car Accident: Step by Step

Minor Accidents

If you’re involved in a fender-bender, or another Thomasville driver backs into your new car in a parking lot, here’s what to do after a minor car accident:

  1. Find out if you or your passengers need medical attention. Remember, when you’re in shock, you may not feel pain or notice injuries. Ask everyone in the vehicle how they feel and check yourself over. If someone needs medical attention, call an ambulance immediately!
  2. Pull your vehicle over to a safe spot, but only if you can do it safely. It’s best not to get too far from the scene of the accident, but you don’t want to stay where you’re in danger or are blocking traffic.
  3. Call 911 and ask for the police to be dispatched. Even if the other driver says that you don’t need to call the police, you should still call. Your insurance company will want you to have an official report documented.
  4. Exchange contact information with everyone involved. Exchange phone numbers, email addresses, and auto insurance information with the other driver(s) involved in the collision. Take a photo of their driver’s license, license plate, and insurance cards. If there were witnesses, collect their contact information as well.
  5. Document your vehicle’s damage. Take photos of all the damage to your vehicle and the other one involved. Also, take a picture of the accident scene.
  6. Call your insurance agent. The sooner you tell them about the accident details, the sooner they will open your car accident insurance claim.

Major Accidents

Major accidents are ones that result in severe injuries or even fatalities. These are the steps to take after a major accident:

  1. Call 911 immediately. Call to request emergency services or have someone call on your behalf. The police, fireman, or an ambulance will come to evaluate the scene and damage. If you need prompt medical attention and can’t document critical information on your own, it’s okay. The police will likely do it for you. Still, you should follow up when you’re able to ensure that you have all the information needed.
  2. Contact your insurance provider. Even if someone has already opened your car accident insurance claim on your behalf, you should follow up with your insurance agent.
  3. Follow up with your physician. Keep getting medical attention for as long as you feel pain after the accident. Follow you’re doctor’s instructions until you make a full recovery.

How to File a Car Accident Insurance Claim

Filing a car accident insurance claim is relatively straightforward. Simply call your insurance provider and give them the following information:

  • Your insurance policy number (found on your insurance card)
  • A detailed description of how the accident happened
  • Date, time, and location of the accident
  • All the contact and insurance information you collected from the other people involved
  • Name of the police department involved and the police report number

Next, your vehicle will be evaluated by an insurance adjuster who will help get you an estimate for the cost of repairs, coverage, and more.
